The ocean plays a major role in regulating the Earth's climate, through heat transport (thermohaline circulation) and heat exchange with the atmosphere. For example, the Gulf Stream is responsible for the more temperate climate experienced in North-Western Europe compared with other regions situated at the same latitude. Ocean observing systems can provide valuable information for monitoring and predicting climate change.
