POGO: Taking the Pulse of the Global Ocean

 

 

For more than a decade, the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans, POGO, has served as a forum for leaders of major oceanographic institutions around the world to promote global oceanography, particularly the implementation of international and integrated global ocean observing systems. POGO is an international network of collaborators who foster partnerships that advance efficiency and effectiveness in studying and monitoring the world’s oceans on a global scale. Through its efforts, POGO has promoted observations underpinning ocean and climate science, interpreted scientific results for decision makers, provided training and technology transfer to emerging economies, and built awareness of the many challenges still ahead.

International Quiet Ocean Experiment Open Science Meeting -Deadline for Early Registration PDF Print

The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) and Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO) are convening an open science meeting for an International Quiet Ocean Experiment (IQOE) at IOC-UNESCO in Paris, from 30 August to 1 September 2011. The deadline for early registration is 31 July. The purpose of the open science meeting is to develop a Science Plan for the IQOE, a focused international research effort that may last a decade or so.

State of the Gulf Summit Attended by NOAA Administrator PDF Print
Jane Lubchenco, NOAA Administrator and Undersecretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, attended the 2011 State of the Gulf Summit in Houston, Texas, where she delivered a speech on "Challenges to assuring the health of the Gulf of Mexico".

Ocean acidification warning to Durban climate negotiators to act on reducing CO2 emissions PDF Print
Climate negotiators at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Durban climate talks were urged to consider ocean acidification and changes taking place in the southern ocean due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and ocean researchers released important briefings on ocean acidification and changes taking place in the southern ocean on November 29, 2011.
