ESA CryoSat Mission Providing Valuable Ocean Observation Products

Ocean measurements from ESA's CryoSat mission are being exploited by the French space agency CNES to provide global ocean observation products in near-real time. Understanding sea-surface currents is important for marine industries and protecting ocean environments.

As it orbits from pole to pole, CryoSat's main objective is to measure the thickness of polar sea ice and monitor changes in the ice sheets that blanket Greenland and Antarctica. But the satellite also features an innovative radar altimeter that not only detects tiny variations in the height of the ice, but can also measure sea level and the height of the waves.

The Southern Ocean Observing System (SOOS) is now up and running, with an International Project Office hosted by the Institute of Marine and Antarcic Studies (IMAS) at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia. The Scientific Steering Committee has been nominated and is co-chaired by Mike Meredith (also POGO representative on the SSC) and John Gunn. The first SSC meeting was held in Salt Lake City in February 2012. The Initial Science and Implementation Strategy has just been published, and can be downloaded here. A limited number of hard copies are also available from the POGO Secretariat.

A research effort led by the University of Colorado Boulder is launching a two-year study of Arctic sea ice to determine whether areas like the Beaufort Sea and the adjacent Canada Basin have passed a ‘tipping point’ and now are essentially sub-Arctic zones where ice disappears each summer. The team will use unmanned aircraft and satellites to ocean buoys in order to understand the characteristics and changes in Arctic sea ice, which in September 2011 was more than 1 million square miles below the 1979-2000 monthly average sea ice extent for September. See press release.
